This collection contains records of military courts and tribunals created by the First Territorial Military Court, during the Spanish Civil War and Francoist Regime. Records date from the year 1936 onwards and typically include the name of the soldier, the year and place of the trial and references to the summary and installation file. These records reference the larger case files that contain full details of the judicial case that individuals were involved in, still held by military archives.

Military courts oversaw the punishment of political crimes (among other things), and were the only ones able to issue the death sentence for ‘wreaking havoc in the national conscience’ or ‘subverting the basic principles of the state’. These acts could be achieved by as little as being denounced as a member of a political party, or a supporter of the Republic of Spain. A great number of people were accused and detained during this period, with the judicial files created often containing evidence, statements, and details of the possible eventual sentence.

These records are © Ministry of Defence of Spain.
